· Peptic ulcers and insufficient digestive enzymes that slow down the process of digestion

· Smoking is another common cause of heartburn because of the lower levels of bicarbonates in the saliva
· Alcohol has also been found to be one of the causes, but it can easily be treated by cutting down on the intake or quitting it altogether
